O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when he was still in highschool. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the judges' enthusiasm in her performance. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered significant losses in the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated to the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were stunned by this and advised the audience to choose contestants similar to Melissa, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. Her performance on the 7th September in 2005 was such a dazzling performance that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie and became the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was made public by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
